Turnkey Linux
July 14th, 2009 by MattTurnkey Linux is an interesting open source project I happened across fairly recently. They have several different specialized Ubuntu-based Linux distros tuned specifically to run certain scripts. The slim OSes run around 150MB in size, and have just the right packages installed for a trouble-free experience. The specialized installs include
- WordPress
- phpBB
- Drupal
- Rails
- And many others
The systems are setup to automatically update daily with the latest security patches, with a cronjob checking apt.
A few other specialized features are included, such as a web control panel for easily managing the system.
Unfortunately, Turnkey is yet to make its way to several VPS providers I checked, and I'm not too thrilled to have to build everything up myself.
If it does develop into a proper, supported OS, I think it could be the end of headaches of a lot of bloggers who have the traffic, but not the knowledge of LAMP stack, to run a VPS themselves.
The auto update w/ cron seems fun, I might try that when I finally move to a VPS (hopefully soon).
It's on VPS.net, whom I think I will probably be moving to this September. I like what they're doing there, and they have a great community starting.
My web hosting is Linux and to be honest I would never turn back to a Window's host.
