Snapfiles

Saturday, June 2nd, 2007

SnapFiles has it’s freeware and shareware separated into separate of categories. Then there are categories below those to make navigation easier. I’ve gotten some really cool freeware off this site (including a great screengrab program). There’s even a huge webmaster category (with a dozen subcategories).

CSS Column Length Adjustment Script

Saturday, June 2nd, 2007

Frustrated with CSS’s inability to make your navigational sidebars the same length as your content (or vice versa)? Project Seven’s got a script that’ll help. This JavaScript library adjusts your CSS columns to be the same height. Technically you can do this with CSS, though it’s a big pain.

Mozilla Firefox

Saturday, June 2nd, 2007

What??!! You’re still using Internet Explorer as your main browser? Download Firefox now! It had tabs well before IE (IE 7 is the first version with tabs), it’s more secure, it runs faster, and it has support for extensions (add-ons that give Firefox more features). Its totally superior to IE and always will be. Version 2.0 is out and it’s knocked the socks off IE7 (with version 3.0 on the way).

Fusion News

Saturday, June 2nd, 2007

Fusion News is similar to CuteNews, but it doesn’t do RSS, and it stores it’s data in a MySQL database instead of a text file. Personally, I prefer CuteNews (or Wordpress).

Beware, don’t mention CuteNews on the Fusion News forum. Fusion News users and CuteNews users are constantly fighting over which is better.

TheFreeSite.com

Saturday, June 2nd, 2007

TheFreeSite.com. Cool domain, isn’t it? This site is a HUGE repository of software downloads, and scripts for web sites. Worth looking at, even if you don’t find anything you need right away, you’ll find a of cool things you may want to add to your site (not to mention useful software to download).

DynamicDrive

Saturday, June 2nd, 2007

DynamicDrive is a huge repository of DHTML scripts. Some of their scripts have little practical value, but others are truly useful. Their IFRAME resizing and RSS ticker scripts can be useful, for instance. It has nearly zero practical use, but the snow script is cool (it makes snow fall from the top of the screen). I like their “CSS Library,” where they have numerous CSS menus. Take a look, it’s a great site.

Download.com

Saturday, June 2nd, 2007

Have you heard of Download.com? Of course you have! It’s probably the most famous shareware repository around. They have plenty of free stuff available on their site, and an overabundance of trialware. I stop in now and then, when I’m looking for something in particular, though I check other sites as well.

CuteNews

Saturday, June 2nd, 2007

Tired of hand-coding your site’s news every day? Why don’t you use CuteNews? Just type the news into a form and it’ll store it in a text file, adding it to your news page and creating/updating an RSS feed. Aside from Wordpress, this is my favorite CMS script. CuteNews is sort of a mini CMS, working great for numerous things. I use it for The Site of Requirement’s news.

Activemeter

Saturday, June 2nd, 2007

Activemeter is a nice traffic stat tracker. All you do is paste a short code into your pages’ headers. Activemeter will then give you stats that include hits, unique visitors, ISPs, cities, states, counties, etc. Activemeter is great for small sites, though I’ve outgrown them. I’ve been using Google Analytics instead.

Bravenet

Saturday, June 2nd, 2007

Bravenet has quite a few good templates. My favorites are the basic ones with the solid colored sidebar. They are really easy to modify, and you’ll have a working site in minutes. They have WAY more than just templates, though. In addition to layouts there are polls, banner exchanges, password gates, redirect pages, and other useful scripts to add to your site. They offer basic hosting as well (not reviewed due to forced ads on all pages).
